A 12-by-24 or 16-by-24 single bay is often the largest building that fits behind an older Hallowell house without crowding the lot line. It keeps one car out of the snow and leaves a side wall for shovels, the snowblower and the patio chairs that otherwise winter on the porch.
Many of these lots climb the hill above the river, so the garage often sits into the slope, with the uphill side cut back and graded so water runs around the building. We finish the approach in compacted gravel to the door line, never a concrete apron that would heave and crack on a cold hillside.
