On a wide Windsor field, a garage with its doors on the sheltered side stays clear of the drifts that would otherwise bury the entries after every storm. We set the long back wall toward the prevailing wind and carry a deeper roof overhang across the door side to keep blowing snow off the threshold.
Open ground also means the building takes the full force of a winter gale, so the roof framing is tied down and the walls anchored to the foundation as the code requires. Gravel runs to each door, and it stays put where a poured apron on exposed ground would heave and crack.
